A guide on how to get a 5 star island rating in Animal Crossing New Horizons! The game gives you points in 2 different categories, so we'll break down the whole system in this video so you can get your own 5 star island rating, and without any super expensive items either! We have information from the official guide, and I've done some testing of my own as well, so there's plenty of material packed in here. This is how it works:

0. PREREQUISITES: Get 9 villagers, I had 10. Build the campsite, ask the villager to stay, go to Tom Nook and get a housing kit, put it down and ask the villager again. Buy more housing kits from Tom Nook for 10k bells and put them all down, then ask villagers at the camping site or mystery tour islands to join your island.

1. DEVELOPMENT & SCENERY: 665+ points needed
- museum building: 15 points
- upgraded Nook's Cranny: 15 points (wait 30 days after the store first opens up, buy and sell 200k bells worth of stuff)
- Able Sisters tailor store: 15 points (buy over 5000 bells worth of clothing from Mabel the hedgehog at the main square)

-bridges & inclines: 15 points each, 8 maximum for both (16 total, build as many of these if you want to minimize the amount of furniture on your island, I had only 3 & 4)

- fencing: 1 point of every 5 pieces of fencing (I had 583 pieces for 117 points, put furniture instead!)

- furniture: 1 point for each piece of furniture, whether it's store furniture, DIY furniture, nook miles items, clothing, fish, bugs, fossils etc. If the item has the "place item" command, you can put it down as furniture for points!
* outdoor items give you 0,5 extra points (example: camping stove)
* items costing more than 2000 bells give you 1 extra point
* items costing more than 20k bells give you 2 extra points
* if you place 11 or more unique items in an 8x8 block (every map square is divided into 4 of these), you'll get some extra points. For example 12 unique items = 15 points, don't worry about this though, just put down a lot of items instead

How to get a 5 star rating easily: Place down everything you have stashed up in your house closet, even clothing, fish and bugs! 1 point each, even for common butterflies or seabass! : D (you'll just need to put down A LOT of items, so keep buying furniture from Nook's Cranny, the Nook Shopping app, shaking non-fruit trees for items, buying clothes, catching bugs and fish, digging up fossils etc)

2. NATURE & LANDSCAPE: 450+ points needed
- 1 fully grown tree = 1 point each, 190 maximum points
* the amount needs to be under 220 though, otherwise the town will be considered to be "too rural"

- 1 fully grown flower = 1 point, no limit on how many you can have!
- flower sprouts = 0,5 points, flower stems & buds = 0,7 points
→ grow as many flowers as you can, I had over 700 for over 700 nature points!

- DIY furniture gives you 0,25 points for every piece, 4 pieces = 1 point
- 3x1, 3x2, 3x3 DIY furniture give you 1 point
- if you have 11 unique pieces inside an 8x8 block, you'll get full points (don't worry about this, just grow trees and flowers)

How to ace the NATURE section: grow 190 trees and 260 flowers, done! Or, you could just have 450 flowers I guess, haven't tested all flowers though.

BAD BEHAVIOUR 1: LITTERING, aka messy island
- if you have more than 15 pieces of items lying on the ground, the island will be considered messy
- don't drop stuff on the ground, pick it up! (pick up weeds too)
- rock, branches, seashells, star fragments etc which automatically appear on the ground will not count

BAD BEHAVIOUR 2: CLUTTERING
- the game divides each map square into 4 blocks of 8x8, 64 tiles total
- if you cover up 45 or more tiles in a 64 tile block, the game will consider your island to be cluttered
*solution: even if packing furniture super tightly, use maximum blocks of 2x7 with 1 space around all sides. That way, the maximum density will be 42 tiles covered in a block, so no problem

What is the reward for getting a 5 star island rating?
You'll get the recipe for the Golden Watering Can which allows you to get golden roses from black roses! The rare lily of the valley flower will also start spawning on your island.
