About this video: If you want to get perfect drone shots every single time you take off your drone, you’re going to need to get comfortable with your drone. Find an open field or empty parking lot where you can fly around with having to worry about hitting anything like a tree or building. Then, take your drone and fly around. Get comfortable flying in a straight line, flying up in the air while moving forward, moving side-to-side, landing and just overall being comfortable.
Next, think about what you are shooting with your drone. Sunset and sunrise are known as the “golden hours”, and the reason for this is that this is a beautiful time for photo and video of landscapes. If you’re not shooting at sunrise though, you still need to make sure your subject is beautiful. Whether it is a lake, mountain, car, city, or anything else, you need to have a subject that you are shooting. Now, let's get on into shot types!
First up we have the Endless Fly-Up. To execute this show, get your drone around 5 feet off the ground and then fly up gentle moving your camera down as you continue to move up. You should be flying up a bit faster than your camera is moving. Stop the camera movement before the horizon disappears.
Our second shot type is the Bird's Eye View. This one is pretty easy, and it can create some incredible video. Get your drone up in the air above the trees, point the camera straight down at the ground, and then fly forward. This produces a really cool shot that can look incredible when flying over forests or roadways.
Next, let’s talk about the Lateral. To do the lateral, just get your drone around 3-7 feet off the ground, point the camera forward, and fly sideways. This can produce some awesome shots, but be careful not to hit something in the process. It’s really easy to run your drone into something, but if you want to show how large something is, the lateral can be a great way to do it!
Our fourth shot recommend is the Slow Rise. In order to get a slow rise shot, you point your drones camera straight down, get around 3-5 feet off the ground and fly up. This can be a great way to establish an area you are going to be shooting, and it looks really cool when jumping forward in time to music during a drone montage.
Now we couldn’t do a video about drone shots without mention the Follow Shot. Of all the shots on this list, this one is probably the most difficult. It really does require you to know how to use your drone and control it properly. With this, you are going to either be following an object like a car, a boat, a person jogging, or you are going to follow a road, coastline, path, etc. to get a moving shot. This can really help set up a traveling shot, and it can create some really cool action style shots as well. It can be hard to execute, but when done correctly, the follow shot is absolutely beautiful.
Last but not least, let’s talk about the Fly-By shot. With this shot type, you are going to be flying your drone past something in the foreground. The closer you can comfortably get, the better. This could also be flying through something like under a bridge or through a tunnel. This shot is great by itself, but it's even better if when you pass the object, you open up to another beautiful view. For example, you could fly past a bridge and open up to a city or mountain view.
With that being said, there are 6 incredible shot types to use with your drone. The combination of these shots and the other general drone tips I covered in this video, you will be flying like a pro and getting perfect drone shots with every flight in no time!
