Hi I am 1up Indie and I create videogame programming tutorials here on YouTube for gamemaker studio. This video is showing you the glorious way how a channel can grow on youtube the legit way from 0 to 1000 subscribers.

For who is this video?

People who want to have a peak inside a small channel like mine, people who already have a youtube channel and ones that want to make one. Here I will lay out what you really need to know without the clickbait falsehoods you see swarming in the web. This by no means the golden way and you can be super successful or not with the guide I present to you. If you cannot be bothered to watch the whole video (waaay to long), here are my main core principles you need to look out for in your channel.

1. Don't start your channel with a half baked video as your primary one. YouTube gives you a hard boost at the very start. If you mess that up (I did) then you will be thrown into yt purgatory with suuuuper slow growth. Yt boosts first 2-4 Video and then you are on your own.

2. Make appealing thumbnails. Yes this is most crucial one of all, once people clicked on your video you are half way in already. Doesn't work if it is pure clickbait and your video is a stinker (people jump off fast).

3. Keep the attention as long as possible. People have mostly a low attention span. They can close your video faster then you can say sandwich. The sweet spot is between 7-12 minutes. The longer anybody watches your video, the more yt loves you (gets recommende more). Video watchtime and thumbnails are the most important factors. They dwarf all the other factors.

4. Keywords. Yes, here you need to do some research what your target group wants to see and put those words in your description, headline, thumbnail and most importantly in your tags. Somebody searches how soap tastes, you have those keywords - Booom we have a match, YouTube shows your video.

5. Define your target group. Is there much competition? Is the target group relevant?
It makes no sense to make let's plays when you have an infinite group of people who do the same.

6. Make money on YouTube. This is a perpetuated myth. Only pewdiepieand and 5 of his hombres are actually making money on youtube with views. This doesn't mean that it has no benefits. You get free exposure on the most popular site in the web.

A sidestory:
I started this YouTube channel effectively in April 2019 because I uploaded videos on a regular basis. I was programming in gamemaker and was annoyed that most tutorial channels pretty much stopped early on. So I decided to be one of the few gamemaker gods. What I found out that the grind is real (most stopped because way too low roi) and to feed the YouTube beast you have to have stamina to keep on uploading. After one year I reached the 1000k sub milestone. Was it all worth it? In my opinion yes, I still enjoy doing this as a side gig. I provide (hopefully) free programming content that is actually useful to beginner and advanced gamemakers. The flip side is that I get exposure (even though limited) and can come in contact with like-minded developers or have a base of followers that are maybe interested in premium offers (patron) from my side.

How the future? I honestly cannot tell. On the one side I see the channel growing more than linear, which is great. On the other hand, who knows. Maybe yoyo stops supporting gamemaker and that would ruin my and other channels in an instance. Things happen. For everybody, I wish them success if they want to get their feet wet in the world of YouTube. Just don't believe in the myths that are being told and see what YouTube really is, a platform for mindless and silly entertainment (love it!!). And in some dark niches you find some gold nuggets ready to be harvested.
