In the earlier game before you get binoculars, as you approach any of the AI NPC characters wandering around the zone, if you want know if they're friendly or hostile dangerous, simply aim your cross-hairs at them & look for the colour!

Friendly NPC's will be green, red hostile enemies red & neutrals yellow (from what I remember!)
