About this video: This is our complete guide on how to make a modded Minecraft server in 1.20.1. Specifically, we are going to be covering how to make a Forge server in Minecraft 1.20.1 letting you play any Minecraft Forge mods you want with your friends. We even show you how to add mods to your Forge server in 1.20.1 and ensure that your friends can join your server.
First, we show you the easiest way to make a Minecraft modded server. This is done using our company SimpleGameHosting. You can literally get your server up and running in just a few clicks including adding mods. We even let you make a CurseForge server easily.
If you would rather create a modded Minecraft server on your own computer though, we cover that in-depth as well. First things first, you will need to download Forge from the link in the description above.
Once you have Forge, create a folder titled “Modded Minecraft Server 1.20.1” on your desktop. Open the Forge file you downloaded with Java, and first click “Install Client” and click “Okay”. This will install Forge in singleplayer, which is required to join a modded server.
Next, open the Forge installer again, and select “Install” server. Click the three dots in the red box that appears. Select the Modded Minecraft Server folder you created on your desktop. Then, click the “Okay” button to install the modded server files.
From there, open up the folder on your desktop, and you will have a run.bat file. Double click this, and your modded Minecraft 1.20.1 server will try to start. It will fail. You will have a new eula.txt file though. Open this notepad, and change “eula=false” to “eula=true”. Save the .txt file.
Now, double-click the run.bat file. This will start the server. Launch Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge and join the server using “localhost” as your IP.
For your friends to join, you will need to port forward. This is covered in-depth in the video, but specifically, you will need to forward port 25565 on the TCP and UDP protocols. Once you have done this, get your public IP address from the link in the description above. This is the IP address your friends will use to join the server.
In order to add mods to your server, make sure that they are 1.20.1 Forge mods. Then, add them to the “mods” folder in your server directory. You will also need to install the mods in your local “mods” folder located within the .minecraft folder. Your friends will also need to install all of the mods on the server locally and play Minecraft with Forge in order to join.
