How to Make an Argument and Counterargument - Piracy: For and Against
Today we talked about the Pros and Cons of Piracy and were issued your first debate assignment. By the start of the next class you will need to write an argument for piracy on the discussion forum on Canvas, making a claim and supporting it with evidence, and then after the start of the next class you will be issued a peer review on Canvas and you must write a counterargument.
A counterargument can be one of these options:
1) You find an error in their logic
2) You look at their sources and find out that they don't say what they thought it said
3) You present a contrary point of view and support it with evidence of your own.
Invalid counterarguments are things like ad hominem (attacking the person not the argument), insults, flat contradiction ("no it isn't!" without evidence) or tone policing (I don't like how you said that!). Let me tone police.
When doing a counterargument, you MUST use the hamburger method of criticism - say something positive, then make your counterargument, then finish with something positive.
