The main reason open nets in Rocket League are so difficult is because you can't gain anything out of them. There's no way to go above and beyond. You can't look like a good player no matter what you do. You either look like an average player if you score it, or a horrible player that doesn't deserve their rank if you miss. This causes you to overthink the shot and try to not miss it instead of aiming specifically to score it. However there is a particular mindset that helps you avoid this bad thinking and score open nets even when they may be difficult mechanically. This video discusses why open nets are difficult by comparison to normal shots with defenders and how to make them as easy as possible so they only rely on your mechanical skill instead of mental skill.
