In this video, I will be showing you how to view AVIF images and AVIF image thumbnail previews in your Windows 11 PC. By default Windows 11 has not assigned or associated any default app with the AVIF file type. By just assigning the Windows Photos app with AVIF files you won't be able to display AVIF images as you will need to download and install an app. AVIF files are an AV1 image file format and are used to store images compressed with AV1 in the HEIF container format. Therefore to open and display AVIF image files in the Photos app you are required to install the AV1 Video Extension app from the Microsoft store. By doing this, you will be able to open AVIF images just like the common image files type such as JPG/JPEG and PNG.
Steps To View AVIF Images On Windows 11:
1. Right click on your AVIF image file
2. Click Properties
3. Click Change
4. Find and select Photos
5. Click Set default
6. Click Apply and then Ok
7. Double click on your AVIF image to open up your image in the Photos app
8. Click on the hyperlink text Download and install it now.
9. Click Yes
10. The Microsoft store will then open on the AV1 Video Extension app
11. Click on the "Get" button to download and install AV1 Video Extension app
12. Close the Microsoft Store and the Photos app
13. Double click once again your AVIF image to display it in the Photos app
Note: AVIF image thumbnail previews will start display instead of the Photos app icon after a system restart.
Congratulations, you have successfully installed AV1 Video Extension app through the Microsoft store to allow you to display AVIF images and image thumbnail previews on Windows 11.
