The Pyro is often seen as a basic, unrefined class that can’t flank effectively in Team Fortress 2 (TF2), with weapons like the Phlogistinator and Scorch Shot gaining popularity among Pyro players.

However, the Flank Pyro playstyle offers a high-risk, high-reward dynamic that can make for an exciting and beginner-friendly experience in Team Fortress 2 (TF2)!

The Flank Pyro playstyle involves catching enemies off guard by attacking from unexpected angles on Team Fortress 2 maps like Upward, Badwater, Swiftwater, Dustbowl, and 2Fort.

This can result in you taking out multiple enemies or even winning the game for your team, but it is a risky playstyle that requires skill and knowledge about how to play the Pyro. It's a challenging Pyro playstyle, but also one of the most entertaining in Team Fortress 2.

When it comes to weapons, the Flank Pyro should prioritize high-impact weapons, burst damage, and mobility. The Backburner, Thermal Thruster, and Detonator are the main unlocks needed for this flanking playstyle. These weapons are great for dealing with enemy snipers, medics, and groups of enemies on the payload cart or on a capture point in Team Fortress 2.

The Backburner may seem like an upgrade to the stock Flamethrower for new Pyro players, but experienced Pyro players know that the airblast is Pyro's most valuable tool. When flanking, Pyro’s airblast ability becomes even more important as it can push enemies away or reflect projectiles.

However, the Backburner only has enough ammo for 4 airblasts and you'll typically only have enough ammo for 3 airblasts because you'll already be using some ammo to attack enemies. This makes the Backburner a high-risk weapon, especially when combined with the Thermal Thruster.

The Thermal Thruster is an underrated unlock that can offer a lot of control and agency over a large part of the map. However, it's also a loud and clunky jetpack, and you won't have any medium or long-range weapons to use.

Despite these issues, the Thermal Thruster can make flanking as Pyro a lot easier on maps with many ways to flank enemies, such as King of the Hill maps and large payload maps like Upward and Swiftwater.

Pyro is a class that is often underestimated in Team Fortress 2, and the Flank Pyro playstyle is one of the most effective but also the most dangerous. The Flank Pyro playstyle offers a fun and beginner-friendly experience, with high-risk, high-reward dynamics and the potential to turn the tide of the game.

To maximize the potential of the Flank Pyro, you should prioritize high-impact weapons, burst damage, and mobility, and utilise the Backburner, Thermal Thruster, and Detonator.
