There’s more to VR storytelling than choosing the right camera. Without audio, your film might not make sense. Full Sail grad and sound engineer Jason Strawley breaks down how to get the best sound for your projects. Traditional filmmaking uses mono microphones which pick up one sound from wherever the microphone is pointed. 360 VR storytelling requires a different sound setup to help capture the sound from every direction. The Sennheiser Ambeo ambisonics microphone features four miniature microphones that enables this type of recording. Whether you’re using a 360 or traditional camera, the ability to record four channels of audio isn’t possible just yet. In addition to the camera and microphone, you’ll need a separate sound recorder to pick up all four channels. The Zaxcom Fusion recorder is an eight input record giving you the ability to pick up lavalier mics, as well. An ambisonics microphone costs between $1,000-$2,000 depending on brand and features in addition to the mic cables, accessories, and the recorder.
