Your iPhone's SIM card is what authorizes it to operate on your cellular service provider's cellular network. As a result, it's important to remove your SIM card before selling or trading in your iPhone. Additionally, you'll also need to know how to take the SIM card out if you're having problems with your iPhone and need to temporarily use your phone number on another device.
Now let's walk through the steps to remove your SIM card from your iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR.
Step 1. Power down your iPhone. Leaving your iPhone powered on while removing the SIM card could damage your smartphone.
Step 2. Locate the SIM card slot along the right edge of your iPhone. The SIM card is located roughly a half inch below where the Side button is located. The Side button is the only button along the right side of the device. While the SIM card slot can be hard to find, if you look closely you'll notice a roughly half inch oval cutout that has a small hole in it.
Step 3. Insert either the iPhone SIM card removal tool or a straightened paperclip into the hole on the SIM card cover, and then very gently push the tool into hole. The SIM card cover will eventually pop out from the side of your iPhone.
Step 4. Gently pull the SIM card tray out of your iPhone. Be careful not to pull the SIM card tray out too quickly, as you could cause the small SIM card to come flying out and get lost.
To insert a SIM card into your iPhone, simply put the SIM card into the tray and gently push the tray back into the side of your iPhone until it lines up even with the rest of the edge of your device.
