The SIM card in your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 plus is what authorizes your device to operate on a GSM cellular data provider's network. AT&T and T-Mobile are the largest carriers that use the GSM network; Sprint and Verizon operate on a CDMA network. Understanding how to remove the SIM card in your iPhone is important if you're switching to a new GSM cellular data provider, or if you're having issues with your cellular data network and you want to see if removing the SIM card in your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus and re-seating it will resolve the issue.
And now, let's walk through how to take out the SIM card in your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus.
Step 1. Locate the SIM card slot along the right edge of your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, roughly one inch down from where the Power button is located. The SIM card slot will be difficult to see because it blends in so well with your iPhone, but you should see an oval that's roughly a half inch long, with a very small circle toward the bottom of it.
Step 2. Insert either a straightened paper clip or a SIM card removal tool into the small hole toward the bottom of the SIM card slot.
Step 3. Push the paper clip or SIM card removal tool into the slot. The SIM card tray will eject from the side of the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, and will stick out roughly a quarter of an inch.
Step 4. Grab the SIM card tray and slowly remove it from your iPhone. Hold one finger against the SIM card while you're doing this so to prevent the SIM card from flying out of the tray upon removal and potentially getting lost. A message will appear on your iPhone screen that says No SIM Card Installed. You can also verify that your SIM card is no longer recognized by launching the Settings app on your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus and checking the Cellular option. After your SIM card is removed, you'll just see a message that says No SIM.
You can put the SIM card back in your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus by ensuring that the circuit board on the SIM card is facing down in the tray, and then sliding the tray back into your iPhone. Push firmly against the tray after inserting it to make sure it's flush with the side of your iPhone. You can verify that the SIM card is recognized by navigating back to the Settings app and tapping "Cellular." Information associated with your carrier should now appear in the Cellular screen.
