When Amazon added Alexa to the Amazon Music app initially in late 2017, it wasn't true integration. Users had to tap the Alexa icon to summon the digital assistant before they could speak commands. However, in May 2018, Amazon released an update that makes it possible for users to access Alexa in the Amazon Music app by simply saying her name. But, there are still some catches. For example, you can only access Alexa if the Amazon Music app is displayed on your device, and you have to turn on the Hands Free with Alexa feature to start using it.
First, let's start with how to enable hands free Alexa voice control on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
Step 1. Launch the Amazon Music app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. You'll land on the Amazon Music home screen associated with your account.
Step 2. Tap the "Options" icon in the upper right corner of the screen. The Options icon features three dots stacked vertically on top of each other. The Amazon Music Options menu flys up from the bottom of the screen.
Step 3. Tap "Settings." The Settings screen appears.
Step 4. Tap the toggle to the right of "Hands Free with Alexa" to turn on that feature. A screen appears that prompts you to let the Amazon Music app access the microphone on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
Step 5. Tap the blue "Allow Microphone Access" button. A dialog box appears on the screen, again asking if you want to let Amazon Music access your microphone. Tap "OK" to let Amazon Music access your microphone. The dialog box will close and a message will flash briefly on the screen prompting you to say, "Alexa." You've successfully turned on the Hands Free with Alexa feature in the Amazon Music app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
Now that hands free voice control with Alexa is enabled, you can only use the feature when you have the Amazon Music app actively open; you will not be able to use the feature if the app is running in the background. To initiate the feature you must have the app open and say "Alexa." Any music that's currently playing will stop playing, and a black screen with the Amazon Alexa logo at the bottom and an I'm Listening message appears.
You can tell Alexa to play a specific song by saying, "Alexa, play" and then saying the name of the artist and the song. For example, if you want Alexa to play Post Malone's Congratulations, you would say "Alexa, play Post Malone Congratulations."
Say "Alexa, play songs by" and then state the name of an artist to have Alexa create and play a playlist of songs by that specific artist.
Say "Alexa, pause" if you want to pause the song Alexa is currently playing.
Say "Alexa, play" if you currently have a song paused and you want Alexa to resume playing it.
Say "Alexa, play next song" if you want to skip the current song and move on to the next song in the current playlist.
Say "Alexa, play previous song" if you want to play the previous song again.
If you decide the Hands Free with Alexa feature isn't for you, you can always navigate back to the Settings part of the Amazon Music app and toggle the feature off.
