In today’s video I’m showing you my approach to softening / smoothening DRIED edges in watercolor.
As you may know, once the paint dries it’s often a challenge to make changes. However - it is possible, and can open up new possibilities and different results.
It’s also worth mentioning again - the ability to soften dry paint will vary greatly, depending on the type of paper, brush and paint you’re using.
I generally find that:
1. Harder & shorter bristles work better (more “scratching” power) for reawakening the paint, but can also lead to harsher results. Find the right balance.
2. Hot-press paper makes it a little easier to lift and play around with dry paint, as the paint tends to stay more on the surface rather than getting absorbed.
3. Some paints are more staining (aka harder to lift / change) than others.
