With the rollout of iOS 12 in late 2018, Apple is making it even easier to update your iPhone or iPad with the introduction of an automatic update feature. With automatic updates enabled you'll be notified when iOS updates are available, and those updates will occur overnight. You'll receive a message the next day after the update is complete that your iPhone or iPad operating system has been udpated. The automatic update feature is disabled by default, but you can turn it on in a matter of minutes.
Now let's walk through the steps to turn on automatic iOS updates for your iPhone or iPad.
Step 1. Tap the "Settings" app on your Apple iPhone or iPad. The Settings app features a gear icon. The Settings screen appears.
Step 2. Scroll down the list of options, and then tap "General." The General icon features a gear icon to the left of it. The General screen appears.
Step 3. Tap "Software Update" at the top of the General screen. The Software Update window opens.
Step 4. Tap "Automatic Updates." The Automatic Updates screen appears.
Step 5. Tap the toggle to the right of Automatic Updates until the circle moves to the right side of the toggle, and the background of the toggle is shaded green.
