In late 2019, Google Maps added detailed voice guidance as a feature that could be enabled when using walking navigation. While the feature can be helpful for everyone, especially in higher traffic areas in larger cities, it was specifically created to help people with visual impairments.
Now let's walk through the steps to turn on Google Maps detailed voice guidance when using walking navigation.
Step 1. Launch the Google Maps app on your iPhone, iPad or Android device. You'll land on your Google Maps home screen.
Step 2. Tap the "Menu" icon on the left side of the search bar toward the top of the screen. A menu flies in from the left side of the screen.
Step 3. Tap "Settings" in the menu. The Settings screen appears.
Step 4. Tap "Navigation" in the Getting Around section. The Navigation screen is displayed.
Step 5. Scroll down to Walking Options, and then tap the toggle associated with Detailed Voice Guidance to turn it on. With the detailed voice guidance feature enabled, you'll now hear more frequent and detailed audio announcements with walking navigation.
