Video Transcript:
With an update in late 2019, Amazon didn't just add the ability for Alexa to speak in additional languages, such as Spanish, they also made it possible for users to set up an Alexa device to operate in multiple languages, such as English and Spanish, depending on what language you speak to that Alexa device. Making your Alexa device multilingual means it will only speak and operate in those languages. However, be aware that changing the languages spoken by your Alexa device may result in you not being able to access some functionality.

Now let's walk through the steps to make an Alexa device multilingual so it can recognize, and speak in, multiple languages.

Step 1. Launch the Alexa app on your iPhone, iPad or Android device. You'll land on your Alexa home screen.

Step 2. Tap the "Menu" icon in the upper left corner of the screen. A menu flies in from the left side of the screen.

Step 3. Tap "Settings" in the menu. The Settings screen appears.

Step 4. Select "Device Settings" in the menu on the Settings screen. The All Devices screen appears displaying a list of all of your devices connected to Amazon Alexa.

Step 5. Tap the name of the Alexa device where you want to change the language to be multilingual. A screen appears for that Alexa device.

Step 6. Tap the "Settings" icon in the upper right corner of this screen. The Device Settings screen appears.

Step 7. Scroll down this screen, and then tap "Language" in the General section. The Language screen is displayed.

Step 8. Tap the multilingual option you want your Alexa device to operate in. The multilingual options will have two languages divided by a forward slash. The Change Alexa's Language window may appear if your chosen languages don't match the language associated with your Amazon account. Additionally, you may be notified that some features may not be available with the languages you're choosing. Tap "OK" to move forward with changing the language of your Alexa device to be multilingual. Another window appears informing you that updating the language spoken by your Alexa device may take a few minutes. Tap "OK" again in this window. You'll see an Updating message beneath chosen multilingual option, along with a check mark to the right of that option. The Updating message will disappear after the languages spoken by your Alexa device have been successfully changed. You can now start operating your Alexa device in multiple languages.
