If you plan on selling your old AT&T iPhone on your own and not trading it in when you purchase a new phone, you'll have to know how to unlock your device. Unlocking your AT&T iPhone will make it easier to sell because whoever purchases your old iPhone will be able to instantly pop in a new SIM card associated with another carrier who operates on the GSM network and be up and running instantly, and it can be used with international carriers who operate on the GSM network. In this video, I'll show you how to put in an unlock request with AT&T to perform the initial unlock of your device, and I'll walk you through how to restore your iPhone to its default factory settings so you can completely remove all of your personal data from the device so it will be ready to sell.
The first thing you'll need to do is put in an unlock request with AT&T to unlock your device.
Step 1. Open your web browser and navigate to att.com/deviceunlock to navigate to the AT&T Device Unlock Portal.
Step 2. Click to select "Unlock a Device." A form appears.
Step 3. Select whether or not you're an AT&T customer, and then enter your ATT mobile phone number in the field provided. Scroll down further. Click to place a check mark in the box indicating you've reviewed the legal agreement and agree to AT&T's device unlock eligibility requirements. Click "Next" at the bottom of the screen. Another form prompting you for information associated with your account appears.
Step 4. Supply the first and last name for the account holder associated with the phone number you entered that you want to unlock. Enter your AT&T wireless security passcode if you have one. Continue moving down this form and enter the email address in the two fields prompting you for that information. Indicate whether or not you're deployed military, and then click "Next" at the bottom of the screen. Another form appears, prompting you for more account information.
Step 5. Enter the IMEI number associated with the ATT device you want to unlock in the first field. This number, the International Mobile Equipment Identity number, is the unique identifier associated with your physical device. If you don't know your device's IMEI number, you can find it by launching the Phone app on your iPhone and then dialing *#06#. Your device's IMEI number will automatically appear on the screen. After entering your IMEI number, click "Submit" at the bottom of the form. ATT will send you an email within 24 hours asking you to confirm your unlock request. If you don't confirm your request, ATT will cancel it. Click the blue "Confirm" link in the email to confirm your unlock request. You'll be routed to an ATT website thanking you for confirming your request to unlock your iPhone.
Step 6. After 48 hours, navigate back to the AT&T Device Unlock Portal, click "Check an Unlock Status," and enter the required information to check on the status of your ATT iPhone unlock request. When your request is complete you can proceed to the next section to complete unlocking your AT&T iphone.
Now let's walk through how to restore your iPhone to its default factory settings and complete the process to unlock your ATT iPhone.
Step 1. Tap to launch the "Settings" app on your iPhone. The Settings screen appears.
Step 2. Scroll down the Settings screen, and then tap "General." General features a gear icon to the left of it. The General screen appears.
Step 3. Navigate to the bottom of the General screen, and then tap "Reset." The Reset screen appears.
Step 4. Select "Erase All Content and Settings." A prompt to update your iCloud backup before proceeding appears. If you want to create a new iCloud backup, stop and do it now.
Step 5. Enter the passcode associated with your iPhone if prompted. A menu flys up from the bottom of the screen, informing you that proceeding will delete all media and data, and reset all settings on your ATT iPhone. Tap the red "Erase iPhone" option." Another menu flys up repeating the same warning, and informing you that this action can't be undone. Tap the red "Erase iPhone" option again.
