Until the introduction of the iPhone X, the process to shut down your iPhone has always been the same: hold down the Power button, and then slide the on-screen circle to the right to turn your iPhone off. With the iPhone X, XS, XS Max, and iPhone XR, that process has changed. In this video, I'll show you two ways to turn off your newer model iPhone.
The first way to completely turn off your iPhone X, XS, XS Max, or XR that I'll walk through uses a new button combination.
Step 1. Locate the Side button along the upper right edge of your device. The Side button is the only button along the right edge of your iPhone.
Step 2. Locate the Volume Up button along the left edge of your device. The Volume Up button is the button closest to the top of your iPhone.
Step 3. Hold both the "Volume Up" and "Side" buttons down for roughly three seconds. A screen appears with a Slide to Power Off toggle along the top, and an Emergency SOS toggle in the center of the screen.
Step 4. Slide the "Slide to Power Off" toggle from the left to the right side of the screen. Your iPhone will be completely powered down after a few seconds.
The next option for turning off your iPhone X, XS, XS Max, or XR is to work through the Settings menu.
Step 1. Tap to launch the Settings app on your iPhone home screen. The Settings screen appears.
Step 2. Scroll down, and then tap "General." The General option features an image of a gear to the left of it. The General screen appears.
Step 3. Scroll down to the bottom of the General screen. You'll see a blue Shut Down button. Tap "Shut Down." A gray screen appears that just has a Slide to Power Off toggle at the top of it.
Step 4. Slide the "Slide to Power Off" toggle from the left to the right side of the screen. Your iPhone will be completely powered down after a few seconds.
