About this video: This video is our complete guide on how to update a Minecraft server. We go over how to update a vanilla Minecraft server, modded Minecraft server, and server with plugins. This means that no matter what, you will know how to change the version of your server when you finish this video. Specially, we go over how to update a Minecraft server to 1.19 as that is the most recent version. It is worth noting though that this will work for other versions as well.
First things first, we will need to back-up your server. You can do this by simply copying your server folder and pasting it on your desktop. This is a requirement as if you do have issues updating, you will be able to restore your server without any issues. We also recommend downloading files from a remote host if you use one before updating just in case.
Once you have your sever backed up, we can move on to how to update your Minecraft server to 1.19. First things first, you will need to download the updated sever file. You can find a link in the description above to the download for all of the Minecraft server versions. For this video, we recommend clicking download next to 1.19. Then, click ‘Download Server Jar’ on the next page.
With the server.jar downloaded, all you need to do is replace the server.jar in your server directly with the new server.jar. When you start your server again, it will be updated to Minecraft 1.19.
For a Paper server with plugins, you will do the same replacement, you will use the Paper.jar instead. You will also need to update all of your plugins to the 1.19 version of the plugin.
Modded Minecraft servers are a bit more tricky, and honestly, we recommend just starting new when it comes to modded server. However, if you do want to update a modded server to 1.19, you will need to update all the mods to 1.19 before updating the server. Otherwise, you will have issues.
