There certainly have been some stability issues with the nVidia 295.40 drivers that were included in Ubuntu 12.04.
In this video I show you how to add the the X.Org Stable Updates Repository into Ubuntu 12.04 and then install the latest nVidia drivers (295.53 at time of recording)

There is also an X.Org Edgers Unstable PPA that comes with the Beta nVidia drivers and Linux Kernel 3.4. But I wouldn't advise adding that for day-to-day use.

Install Instructions:
*For nVidia / ATI - Install Proprietary Graphics drivers via Additional Drivers
*Open Terminal
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
*Reboot

If the Ubuntu Additional Drivers application didn't find your drivers initially, then add the above repository and then install nVidia / ATI drivers manually via Software Centre.
