An easy way to enter Split Screen mode in Mac OS X is to click and hold the GREEN maximize button for a moment, then drag the window to one side of the screen, and select another window for the split panel. The video demonstrates how this works, accompanying the tutorial here:

You can escape Split Screen / Full Screen mode by clicking on the Green button again, or by hitting the Escape key

This works in modern MacOS and anything later then Mac OS X El Capitan.
