This is a classic case of Star Trek introducing stuff that might or might not get re-used. Certain aspects of the Trill race get re-used later and the backstory gets massively expanded later, but... this ep focuses on the basics.... some of which get ignored later.

Most notably the way Trill look. That actually swipes the makeup for Kriosians when they do it in DS9. but a lot of stuff about how they get written isn't used later either.

Later stuff has them being friends of the Federation and Klingons, but we're never seen the origins of any of that.
