Howler for an Hour: Fall of Light

Dark Souls meets Ico...and tumbled into a top-down perspective along the way~
This is not exactly that marriage of games, but it does take a lot of elements from both. Like Dark Souls, combat is heavy and deliberate making every strike and dodge count, there's stanima, you take enemies' souls, and the 'dying medieval world' theme is strong. Like Ico, you're also escorting a little girl about by holding her hand, and reviving her from death where you left her if you die.
This doesn't play out quite like the dreaded escort mission it sounds like. The girl can't be traditionally attacked or killed by most enemies; though she can get captured and have to be saved, and she does die on the spot you left her if you yourself die. Dying itself holds no penalties directly to the player character, but losing the girl in the process is troubling; only she can interact with some objects, such as the checkpoints where you heal; so you are gimped without her, though not helpless.
It's a good balance, I think. Ultimately, you seek to recover the girl much like you recover your lost souls in Dark Souls.
The gameplay is a bit on the simple side, but it does have levelling, abilities, and multiple weapons. The combat is pretty methodical and requires planning, though I did find myself getting a tad impatient at times - especially since enemies respawn upon resting at a checkpoint. (I feel it's worth noting that I rarely if ever get impatient fighting through enemies in Souls games, so I think an important nuance is not captured in Fall of Light to keep combat quite as engaging...at least for me personally.
Honestly, this is pretty good. If you want a Souls-like experience this is fairly similar to that, though not quite as deep and with some of its own variation atop that. I think it's worth playing though.
