I'm late to the party here. SteamWorld Dig has been out for a number of years, and has spawned two lauded sequels as well. It's a great series from what little I've known about it, and I've always wanted to give them a shot too. Now, with the recent release of SteamWorld Dig on the Nintendo Switch and the dev's desire to drum up interest once again in the game where it all started, I was given the change to dig my way into this series at last!

This game reminds me a great deal of old flash games I played as a kid, like Motherload. You dig down into the ground, collect valuable minerals, go topside and sell them, then buy upgrades so you can dig further, more, and better. It's a lovely little cycle that you might call inspired from Minecraft, but the concept predates even that.

SteamWorld Dig has a good rhythm to its gameplay I found, in the hour I played it here. Some could call something like this 'monotonous'; I'd understand that sentiment from the original and simpler flash games this concept started from, but SteamWorld Dig expands upon the idea with upgrades, enemies, and separate puzzle caves you find as you go along. There also seems to be a story present, simple as it may be at the start of the game.

I really do like this game; I found it relaxing in a similar way that mining in Minecraft is relaxing, and I'm gonna keep digging deeper to see what I find along the way! I definitely suggest picking up a copy, considering it is merely $10 on Steam or the Switch. :)
