Hybris (Amiga) Playthrough / One ship to rescue a colony under attack by alien invaders.....Typical
Hybris (1988) is a game developed by Cope-Com, the same studio that later became famous for Battle Squadron. It is a vertical shooter in which you can upgrade your ship by collecting power-ups that increase its size and change its weapon type.
Your ship consists of two parts: the fuselage and the wings.
Being hit in the hull causes you to lose a life and reduces your weapon to its first level, while being hit in the wings only lowers the weapon's development level by one.
Taking damage to the wings also reduces the size of your ship (loss of individual weapon development levels), which in turn makes it easier to avoid missiles.
The power of weapons in the game does not vary much between development levels, as most enemies are killed by a single hit from any weapon, so there is no risk of getting stuck at a certain point in the game where weaker weapons will prevent you from completing it successfully.
These solutions make the game much easier to play and have led to Hybris being recognized as a fair game, in which a single hit does not always result in the loss of a life and all of your equipment upgrades.
A unique feature of this shooter is the ability to temporarily change the form of our ship several times to an alternative form, which causes a different way of shooting than in its standard form, also allowing us to destroy objects behind energy barriers.
In addition, the alternative form of our ship at its fourth level of development provides us with a temporary shield against threats, which we can activate three times.
The number of activations of the alternative form of ship development is renewed each time the level of its weapons is changed. This solution makes it worthwhile to constantly balance between the fourth and fifth or third levels of development in order to maximize the potential of the activated shield.
The game takes place above the surface of three planets and in outer space.
During each of the three stages of the game, we fight bosses several times to finally reach the final stage, i.e., the space station from which waves of enemies appear throughout the game.
The soundtrack fits the gameplay and is pleasant, typically Amiga-style, catchy, and makes the game very enjoyable.
Similarly, the graphics are satisfactory for the time when the game was created.
I recommend Hybris to everyone, as it offers about 25 minutes of pure fun, giving us a rush of adrenaline and the feeling that we are playing a fair game with logical rules and sensible solutions, and one in which a single hit on our ship will not usually result in a significant loss of progress, which encourages us to return to this title.
