Nightmare of Decay (2022) by Checkmaty is a first-person horror game that is somewhat of a tribute to older gamers familiar with such classics of the genre as the first Resident Evil or Silent Hill.

The game tells the story of an unnamed individual who learns from the evening news about strange and unexplained disappearances. These people had previously complained of mental health issues and strange nightmares.
After a night's sleep, it turns out that we ourselves are an example of the situation mentioned in the news, and we begin to fight for our lives in unfamiliar surroundings.

The game is a typical survival horror game, made in the FFP shooter style. There are no groundbreaking new mechanics here, but the good old system is spiced up with interesting surroundings and a storyline.
As usual in such games, we collect items and use them at the right moment or in the right places. We make sure not to waste too many supplies such as ammunition or first aid kits, and we devote ourselves to slow exploration.

Graphically, by today's standards, the game looks rather poor, but it retains the atmosphere of the good old days when graphics were just an addition to the fantastic atmosphere created by the game developers.
It's hard to say anything about the soundtrack here, as it consists mainly of ambient sounds, long tones designed to keep us in suspense and constant uncertainty.
The sounds, however, are fine, both those made by enemies and by the weapons that hurt them :) .

It is evident at first glance that the game draws inspiration from series such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
There are many similarities here... the best example is the legendary first encounter with a zombie from the first Resident Evil, when we see him in a small room feasting on corpses, and when he notices our presence, he slowly turns his head towards us, revealing that he is definitely not an ordinary human being. Here, the first encounter with a zombie is almost identical, reminding us of the good old days when we first played the first Resident Evil on PSX. Throughout the game, we also meet a number of different people, three of whom look almost exactly like characters from the first two Silent Hill games, such as Harry Mason, James Sunderland, and Angela Orosco, aka the weirdo with a knife. Not to mention, of course, that the entire game takes place in a mansion reminiscent of the Spencer Mansion from Resident Evil. But believe me, there is much more to it than that.

Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of the second half of the game, but I'll leave that up to you to judge. You could say that it doesn't really fit in with what we've seen so far. It's as if the realities of two different games have been mixed together. I didn't really like it, but it's very possible that there will be fans of this solution, especially since it borders on several cinema classics.

I played the demo of this game once and I liked it, and now that I've completed it, I don't regret spending money on it.
After completing the game, we unlock horde mode, and that's pretty much it. It's a bit of a shame that no extras were added after completing the game, such as a different monster layout, unique items, etc. After completing the game once, there isn't much else to do, and horde mode never really appealed to me.
So playing again, apart from the fact that you can play on a higher difficulty level, doesn't really offer anything worth fighting for. Of course, I'm not 100% sure, but from what I've seen, that's how it seems to me.

Overall, I recommend the game because it's a throwback to what once impressed and shaped millions of players. Especially since the game isn't expensive.
