This is a game that I had never heard of but I could tell by the cover that it was a shmup so I gave it go. There were 2 difficulty options in this game. One was for experienced players, and one was for novices. I thought since this was a modern game and it also said that enemies die faster in the experienced mode, I went for that. I lasted for about a minute so killed off that idea and started again on easy. Again, it was really difficult. I had a peashooter, and because it was so weak, I was barely killing any enemies. I had to learn quickly that the only way to survive was to dodge enemies and forget about destroying them.
I managed to get passed the first level but soon realised I wasn’t going to be able to complete the next level without upgrading my ship. Now this is the major problem with this game. You have to play the same level over and over again until you earn enough credits to upgrade your ship. It’s not about how skilful you get; it’s about how long you grind for. This is a terrible system which I thought only applied to mobile games that tried to encourage you to pay for credits. The first levels give such a tiny number of credits too. Even though it says on Easy mode you earn more credits. I really had to play the same level multiple times before I could get an upgrade. This was super annoying and the worst part is, there are a large number of weapons that you can unlock and if you want to try them, you can waste your hard-earned credits on a weapon that wasn’t worth upgrading. The safest way was to keep upgrading my first weapon. The credits were so precious that I didn’t want to waste a single one and if I did, I would have to suffer an extra 10 runs of the same level. There are only 5 levels but you only start getting a decent number of credits on the last level. This is mainly because the level is so insanely long. So even one play is quite excruciating.
This gameplay mechanic is such a shame because the game would have been great otherwise. The enemies and environments look great, the weapon sets are great (although to see them you will just have to grind), and the music is especially awesome.
The bosses are hit and miss. Sometimes they will be a decent length but other times, they will drag for an unexpected amount of time. Especially the last boss. That was insanely long.
That fight almost gave me cramp in my fingers from having to hold L and R the whole time without a break.
There are lots of times where a boss will go behind you as well so you can’t shoot at them and you have to wait for it to complete its attack pattern.
It’s also a bit hard to know when a background object will hit you or not. It’s trial and error to find out if you will die or go over an object. I spent a lot of the game isolating myself to a small part of the screen thinking I would get hit and then finding out much later that the whole screen was safe all along. Then I would test the same strategy on another part of the level and get killed.
There is a particular part on the third level were the camera moved to an overhead position and it confused me so I would randomly crash into mountains. This was the make-or-break section in the level which felt random to me and it was quite far in the level.
I could see the potential with this game and the devs seemed to know shmups but I don’t know why they decided on this grind to win mechanic. There is a reason why no other shmups do it.
