Review pt 2:
PART 1 OF THE REVIEW IS IN MY OTHER VIDEO BECAUSE OF THE CHARACTER LIMIT IN THE DESCRIPTION
Watch it here - https://youtu.be/eQhRm4iXSGo

There is a perks system where you can earn money by playing the game and buy perks (basically cheats) to improve your character. The perks I managed to buy made my run easier but it takes a lot of playing to be able to afford one. I don’t like this system because it rewards grinding for credits, rather than grinding to get good at the game.
The way this game is designed, I think it would be very difficult to get good at this game so I think the cheats system is necessary, but you are only awarded for wasting your time really.
I encountered a few bugs in my 2 playthroughs. One was when I continued from a checkpoint, my character couldn’t be seen. I think I was stuck inside the ground and couldn’t jump out. I had to restart the whole level again. There were 2 occasions where the game crashed on me as soon as the level ended and was going to reload. Fortunately, the game saved and I didn’t lose any progress. It also happened on arcade mode which I was sure I lost my progress but it does actually save your position to continue later which I was thankful for.
There are many characters to unlock but I found choosing different characters to be a hindrance because you don’t know what is different about them until you choose. They all have different amounts of lives and hit points, and they can have slightly different weapon pick-ups, and also abilities like hookshot. This threw me off and I realised it was much better to stick to the original characters.
There are a lot of things in the game which you aren’t shown. For example, I didn’t know you could double jump until halfway through my second playthrough. I also found out when editing the video that there was a piece of text that said there is a special bar to fill up and then you can request a power-up. I completely missed this piece of advice as I was too engrossed in a very heavy gunfight so I missed this feature entirely. There is also a move that they do tell you about regularly which is to expend your power up in exchange of a special move. I found this useless and just gave me an extra button to confuse the controls with, which caused me to die many times.
The music is really good, but it is obscured by the loud sound effects. They are also really meaty but I had to turn them down just so I could make out the music. There are also different soundtracks you can unlock. Either remixes or from different games entirely.
Another annoying thing about this game is that the Switch version doesn’t get a physical release. Just a code in a box. But the Xbox and PS5 do get a disc release. I’m not happy with that as a Nintendo and Contra collector.
All in all, although the game is flashy and it looks like it should be the best Contra, it just doesn’t feel that great and can drag, especially with the story line. Although my mind was changed on the game when I played the Arcade mode straight after the Story mode. I enjoyed it a lot more. It’s also a hell of lot better than the last Contra disappointment, Rogue Corps.
