Wipeout - Rapier class | Sega Saturn Playthrough | Real hardware
1This is a classic racer that started a great franchise. The graphics are good for the time and it does a lovely job of handling the speed. It’s one a of the rare occasions that they take a 2D game like F-zero and make it look better in 3D. The controls are good. They can be a little too twitchy but that’s part of the intended difficulty. It’s incredibly difficult to do a lap without bumping a side because on your first go, you will likely be bouncing around like a pinball. There are 6 tracks which is decent for a Saturn racing game. There is another track that is unlocked when you complete the game on Rapier difficulty. The music of course is one of the draws of this game and was one of the biggest factors to making video games in general appear cool.
This is a great first attempt at a futuristic racer. No wonder we got a lot of sequels. Shame the series has died now. Maybe it will be picked up again one day.
