Turok 3 Remastered | Switch Playthrough | Deaths Cut out
This is the PC remaster of the N64 classic.
Review:
This is a solid game but doesn’t quite reach the greatness of the first 2. I think the main problem is that it opts to go for linear design. This isn’t a bad way to go but compared to the exploration of the other games, this game highlights what made them great. There are secrets that you can miss for good if you don’t go the correct path because you can’t go back. It sounds like a normal FPS game but because it is Turok, it really bugs me.
There are lots of weapons in this game. They mainly use the same as the other 2 games but with slight differences. The cerebral bore has been upgraded to have an instant blow-up function which is better but kind of sullies the awesomeness of the cerebral bore. The shotgun upgrade (Fireswarm) is much worse than the Shredder in Turok 2. I only used it once. Because of this I will still say the Turok 2 weapon set is better, but this is by no means does that mean this game is lacking. Turok 2 remains my favourite weapon set of all time.
The music is very good but unmemorable. I won’t remember anything afterwards but I can easily recall music from the first 2 inside my brain.
The game is very short too. About 5 hours, but the intention is to play it again with another character that has a slightly different ability to find different secrets. One can grapple hook, and the other can squeeze through tight spaces. You don’t use these abilities often so you know these were implemented solely to double the time span of the game so it wouldn’t seem so short.
The enemies aren’t so great and really vary in difficulty throughout the game. I really struggled on the second and third levels and then the fourth level was a breeze. One thing you have to work out is that sometimes enemies respawn indefinitely and super quickly so as soon as you kill an enemy, they will respawn by the time you get to the respawn point. This is bad design and you are forced to barge your way through once you realise it’s an infinite respawner.
I wasn’t too impressed with this game at first, especially when I hit a bug on the second stage bug where he wouldn’t attack me and I couldn’t hurt him. I tried all sorts of ways to fix the bug but thought I had to restart the whole second level. Due to this, I had a break from the game because I didn’t want to do the second level again but when I restarted the game I accidentally started from the boss, rather than the start of the level, and was able to complete it. This completely reinvigorated the game for me and from then on I really enjoyed it and was glued.
This is a Turok game but everything is done just slightly worse. I still really enjoyed the game and it is very good, but it doesn’t follow the greatness of Turok 2 which in my mind is a masterpiece.
