Review pt 1:
You can tell the developers put a lot of effort into making this game authentic to the originals but it doesn’t quite hit the mark. It’s created by the Way Forward, who made the awesome Contra 4 on DS. But this was a long time ago and I’m sure all of the people working on this game didn’t work on the previous game.
This game takes a lot of influences from the original games but problem with trying to update old games for present times is that they try to make the game worth the money so they add more content. So, with this in mind, the levels drag on for too long.
They aren’t really memorable either so I think it would be very hard to memorise this game to go for proper runs.
The good thing about this game is that you can choose difficulty settings, like taking hits instead of 1-hit kills. You can choose the difficulty, and you also have infinite continues which restart from the last checkpoint. Although annoyingly, the checkpoint will be lost if you want to go into the shop on the continue screen.
These difficulty settings make the game pretty easy, but it feels cheap because the game is actually really hard.
I mean too hard for a regular run. I was getting hit by really easy enemy shots and I couldn’t quite put my finger on why. I am a Contra veteran and have completed Super Probotector (Contra) on hard and also done the Megadrive (Genesis) version with all endings. I’ve even done the first 2 arcade games with one credit, but this game feels really cheap. I think the reason why I sucked so much was because of too many graphical objects on the screen obstructing the view of the enemy attacks. The other reason is big. I think there is a delay in crouching. I’m sure there is. I died many times by not ducking out of the way in time when I pressed the button when I should. I couple of frames delay really makes a difference.
The other control problem is the button layout. I simply could not get my brain used to using L or R to change weapons, ZR to stand still, ZL for super move, and X to dash. I lost dozens of lives due to pressing the wrong button, or not having time to stop and think what the correct button was in time. It just isn’t natural.
The enemies and environments look great. But I would expect slightly better graphics this late in the Switch's lifetime.
The story is the bane of this game. I really hate the way the characters stop during the game to exchange dialogue. It’s so unnecessary. Inexplicably, the ending of the game suddenly turns into a graphic novel where this comic style is not used throughout the whole game. The talking almost ruined the game for me, until I realised that you can actually play the game in Arcade mode so you can skip the storyline, which made for a much more fun playthrough.
