Did you know that in 2007 they ported Bioshock on Java ? And it's not shovelware like you would expect. There are two versions (2D and 3D) and both are amazing.
Bioshock had two Java ports. And both are pretty impressive. So for starters, they follow the plot of the original game pretty well. And from what I’ve played, it’s pretty close. The wiki articles for both games claim that both the 2D and 3D version follows the plot of the original game almost exactly up until the end of the Smuggler's Hideout level. I’m citing Wikipedia here because you can’t play the full game anymore. See the games are split into episodes. After you complete the first episode, which takes you around 1 or 2 hours, you get this screen that you have to buy episode two. I haven’t downloaded the second episode when the game servers were still up, and you can’t find online the other episodes.
As for the gameplay, it’s pretty neat. You venture Rapture, solve puzzles, beat enemies, loot stuff, complete puzzles, and you can also use Plasmids, and Gene Tonics.
The wiki article states that The 2D mobile version is only about 1/3 the length of the full PC game, and features only the first four levels. But even so, the map is huge. Especially for java game standards. And the graphics are really good too. Enemies are of different types, so that the gameplay doesn’t feel stale. And the game even tries to do cutscenes, which on Java means that the game is on a high level.
And Bioshock 3D tries to get as close to the original game as possible. The game looks like a potato version of the original game. The 3D version is ambitious, but the hardware goes only that far. The game feel clunky and choppy. There is only one enemy attacking you at once, which is great because the controls and framerate aren’t so good. But still, the game is a masterpiece on the technical level. There are so many details like animations, cutscenes, and textures the developers deserve an award. Also I love that they added an arrow to know where to go. And you get the same mechanics like in the original game, only dumbed down a little. The game is amazing… on paper. I’m praising it, because it deserves praise. And if you’ve played Bioshock you will like the Java game because it reminds you of the good times you had in the PC game. But playing this can also be frustrating sometimes. Especially until you get used to the controls. Aiming with a numpad isn’t like aiming with a mouse or a controller. And the framerate can get you out of the immersion, but still, the two games, both the 2D and 3D games are incredible games, that you should play. They excel in their category. More people should know about these two hidden gems. Too bad that you can’t find the other episodes anymore. It would have been amazing. But until someone forgot the episodes in their phone’s memory and shares them with the internet, we still have 1 or two hours of the content we have.
