Iblard: Laputa no Kaeru Machi (PS1) - Playthrough *Severe Flashing Lights Warning*
*This game has some flashing lights in some segments, please take care of yourself*
So this is a game I've wanted to try for quite some time. Iblard: Laputa no Kaeru Machi or The City of Hatching Laputa, is a first person adventure game from System Sacom based on the artwork and world of artist Naohisa Inoue. If that name sounds familiar to you, you may know them from doing the backgrounds and world reference art for the Studio Ghibli film "Whisper of the Heart". Inoue would work with Ghibli quite a bit, even having a short film on their work exclusive to the Studio Ghibli museum.
Our adventure starts with our hero in the main world. He spots some strange travelers who quickly vanish, leaving behind a strange crystal. Touching it, our hero becomes transported the world of Iblard, a fantastical place full of magic. We soon find ourselves with the task of collecting 5 special ores in order to hatch a Laputa, a floating island, in order to make it home. Along the way we'll meet some interesting characters and visit some breathtaking sights. Each stage is based on a piece of artwork by Inoue and with the low poly and blurry textures of the PS1, the world if Iblard feels very ethereal.
We've seen the developers of this title before, back in spooktober '22 with R?MJ Mystery Hospital. Most of System Sacom's games of this era are fmv adventure games, like Lunacy, Mansion of Hidden Souls, or the aforementioned R?MJ. Iblard instead is a fully real-time rendered game with full 3d movement. Puzzles are simple but feel very much like Japanese adventure games you'd see on the system. This is just such a comfy and cozy adventure and I wish there was more Iblard to explore and see.
