2Overview
The Expedition and the longer Expedition Max have the cutting-edge tech, towing capacity, and bus-like people space that exemplify this competitive class of mega-haulers. For propulsion, Ford’s latest twin-turbo V-6 pairs with a capable 10-speed automatic transmission. While the comfy ride and spacious interior are excellent, the Expedition is plagued by ponderous handling and some inferior cabin materials. Still, the Expedition ticks most of the boxes that buyers look for in a modern luxury liner.
What's New for 2018?
Ford redesigned the Expedition from the ground up for 2018. Although it is longer than before and has increased passenger space, it's also lighter, a result of adopting aluminum bodywork. The latest technology now includes an available Sync 3 infotainment system and countless active safety options. Likewise, the last-gen V-6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission have been ditched for updated replacements with more power and more gears.

Engine, Transmission, Performance
The Expedition is powered by a magnificent twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 and responsive 10-speed automatic transmission that pair with rear- or all-wheel drive. The XLT and Limited models have a 375-hp version of the 3.5-liter V-6, while in the top-tier Platinum, it’s tuned for another 25 hp. The 10-speed automatic intelligently swaps gears without fuss. The effortless powertrain is plenty quick, and the supple suspension is relaxed and compliant. But while passengers may be comforted by the Expedition's soft ride, the driver is penalized by ponderous handling and deadened steering.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
With three rows of seats and two sizable body styles, the Expedition is made to haul lots of people and property. It's roomy, comfortable, and can be optioned up to a level of luxury. But even the lofty Platinum trim doesn't quite reach the upscale aesthetics and quality of many of the Expedition's rivals. Still, it has competitive cargo room for this extra-large class, as well as unbeatable interior cubby storage. Every Expedition has a power-folding third row that can be controlled from the cargo area or back seats.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The Expedition is an infotainment sanctuary, with countless connectivity options and abundant available features. Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system is attractive and user friendly, but the 8.0-inch touchscreen is part of an expensive bundle on base models. The Sync 3 system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 4G LTE mobile hotspot. The system is standard on Limited and Platinum models, while a basic stereo and non-touchscreen display come on the XLT. The rear-seat entertainment system is only available on the upper two trims.
