INCREDIBLE ABANDONED CATHEDRALS IN BELCHITE | TRAVEL VLOG SPAIN
584Exploring the ruined town of Belchite in Spain was one of the best memories I have of our travels through the country. Two towering abandoned cathedrals scarred with the bullet holes of a war long past. We arrived not knowing what to expect, but my mind was blown. It was an absolutely incredible adventure.
Belchite means beautiful city, and it was one of the many casualties of the Spanish Civil war in 1937. This city was one of the very first to suffer the effects of an air raid, this type of warfare and just begun to see use, and you can see the results in the cathedrals. They are crumbling.
Losing this town was hard for many people. It's beauty was remarkable. However, instead of repairing the city to its former glory, an new Belchite was built beside it, and the ruins continue to lay abandoned as a war memorial. Because of the thousands of lives that were lost here, it is considered one of the most haunted places in Spain, and they say the echos of war can still be heard in the walls. Scary stuff!
It turns out there are guided tours here. We just showed up and went with the flow. You can organize them at the local tourism office in New Belchite
