sub 7 minutes is very possible, I dropped one major combo around 2:08, without that mistake, the xp I would have earned probably would have given me enough to skip the entire last combo, ~20 seconds of timeloss.

Buying strategy:
bouncers and bombers first because they are cheap. Keep getting those and sprinkle in some miners and planters. I like bouncers better than planters, but both can be helpful. When I feel like I have enough I start to max out miners. Miners are a great fallback to keep combos going, but they are pricey. I don't max out planters because I think they can start to clog up the mid heights, and when there are enough planes on screen I would rather hit a plane than a planter bomb. I don't buy any homers until I get to 5745xp to finish the game, homers are super annoying and not helpful for combos.
Other tips:
I was resetting runs if I didn't get at least 30xp in the first combo.
You have a few seconds after your fuel gauge gets to 0 before you game over. I start trying to hit the ground once I see smoke, and that works great. Basically I'd say don't even look at your fuel gauge or pay attention to the warning beeps.
After any bomb explodes on the ground, the explosion hitbox lasts quite a while and is pretty generous, so you can keep combos going by following bombs all the way to the ground even if they explode well before you get there.
