Turrican (Amiga) - A Longplay Guide and Review - by LemonAmiga.com
Turrican was released by Factor 5 in 1990, on the Rainbow Arts label. It was inspired by Metroid, Psycho Nics Oscar, and games like Thexder. So lets take a long look what is on offer here, and see if can find what made this such a classic on the Amiga!

Turrican is a platformer of high calibre, and I wanted to cover this with some style, so I pulled out quite a few stops to add in lots of things to this review. Unfortunately I forgot to fill in the details for Chris Hulsbeck, which makes the film look unfinished. I also put the label about the Mines in the wrong place on the last world, as I couldnt find where I mentioned them. Despite this, I added at least 6 captions, which all took time to add. Then I edited in the box art, and the maps on the loading screens, and the one at the start - where Manfred is pointing to the start of the game on the map. I then discovered about the cover artist of the Amiga version, and added this info to the Aliens levels to make them more interesting, even though this section was not narrated. Again, I forgot to add any speech bubbles.
The final file was 8GB in size, so it took 3 days to upload it. I had considered splitting this review into two episodes, like I did with the C64 version, but in the end I figured the extra info included would help viewers over the long review.
Danscore:
Turrican is a masterclass in pushing the hardware to the limit, which opened the door for many more open landscape games such as Superfrog, Ruff n Tumble and even Tearaway Thomas. The music is first class throughout. The jumping and control is pin sharp. Weapons are varied but could have done with the rebound from the second and third games, which was included on the NES version. I think the level design is often mind blowing but becomes intuitive after a bit of exploring and a few plays. Exploration is often rewarded with extra lives, of which are is a plentiful supply, and this makes dying not an issue - leaving players to romp around and take risks. There is no instant deaths, and very few leaps of faith. The enemies are always a pushover, and the player never feels overwhelmed or without a fighting chance. I suppose the game is too easy for veterans, and this means it has less replay value then T2 or T3, but its better to be too easy than too hard. Completing the game always feels worthwhile, but some of the more technical level can feel a bit overlong. Especially frustrating are the Aliens levels when you get lost, or have to backtrack because of of falling down the level. Overall I'd give this 8 out of 10. Its solid in all the right places, and fun where it counts.
