Immortals myth story fantasy fable@indy_wu
Immortals
Long ago, the Buddha was giving a sermon in the bamboo grove of Rajagaha.
At that time, there were four Brahmin brothers, each possessing five supernatural powers.
However, it was said that after seven days, they would all meet their demise.
So, they collectively discussed the power of their five supernatural abilities, exploring the heavens and the earth, holding the sun and moon, moving mountains and rivers, and stopping the flow of water. They believed that they could avoid death.
One of them said, "I will dive into the ocean, remaining hidden, neither ascending nor descending, just existing within it.
Even the gods and spirits will be unable to detect my whereabouts."
Another said, "I will enter Mount Sumeru, merging its appearance with the boundless, how can the gods and spirits know where I am?"
Yet another said, "I will easily conceal myself in empty space, how can the gods and spirits perceive my presence?"
And one more said, "I will hide amidst the bustling market, it won't be easy for the gods and spirits to find me."
After their discussion, they bid farewell to each other and left Rajagaha, each with seven days left in their fate.
They hoped to preserve their lives by evading death.
However, after seven days, each person met their end as expected.
The city guard reported to the king that one of the Brahmin brothers had died in the city.
The king suddenly realized and said, "The four individuals attempted to escape death, and one has already died.
How can the remaining three escape on their own?"
The king immediately ordered his carriage to go to the place where the Buddha was, paid his respects, and sat down.
The king asked the Buddha, "Recently, there were four Brahmin brothers, each possessing five supernatural powers.
They knew that their destiny was to die and they tried to avoid death.
Can you please tell me if they have all succeeded in escaping death?"
The Buddha told the king that there were four things that humans cannot escape:
in the intermediate state, one cannot avoid accepting the existence of life;
having been born, one cannot avoid experiencing aging;
having aged, one cannot avoid enduring illness;
having fallen ill, one cannot avoid facing death.
Then, the World-Honored One immediately spoke the following verse:
Not in empty space, nor in the middle of the sea,
Not within mountains or rocks,
There is no place where one can escape death.
This is our reality, the way things are.
People are troubled by this, constantly treading the path of aging and death.
Knowing this, one can attain stillness within,
And see the end of birth and death in this way.
Bhikkhus should abandon the army of Mara,
And attain liberation through the awakening of birth and death.
Upon hearing the Buddha's teachings,
the king exclaimed, "Excellent!
This is truly noble guidance!
The four individuals attempted to escape death, and one has already died, sealing the fate of the others.
All the ministers and officials should believe in and accept this fact."
This story tells us that we cannot escape the destiny of birth, aging, illness, and death.
No matter how hard we try, life will eventually come to an end.
Therefore, we should understand and accept this reality and approach life and death with a calm mind.
