很久以前，在舍衛國的祇樹給孤獨園，佛陀與天人和其他四種生命層次的眾生講法。
當時有一位年輕的比丘，他性格頑固愚鈍，生活在野外，對修行的道理還未理解。
他的情慾念頭蓬勃，思想被欲望所困擾。
陽氣旺盛，無法自我控制。
因此，他感到苦惱，無法超越世俗的煩惱。
他坐下自己思索，想到只有斷除根源，才能達到清淨、獲得修行的跡象。
於是他來到一位布施給他的家庭，向他借了一把斧頭，回到房間，關上門，脫下衣服，坐在木板上，打算自我斧頭斫擊以斷除他的情欲。
他認為情欲使他勞苦，他經歷了無數劫的生死輪回，三界六道的苦難都源自於色欲。
如果無法斷除它，就無法得道。
佛陀知道他的愚癡和困惑，於是進入他的房間。
他問這位比丘，他打算做什麼。
那位比丘放下斧頭，穿上衣服，向佛陀禮拜，自述他學習修行已經很久，但對於修行的方法仍然不了解。
每次坐禪定時，思想被欲望所遮蓋，陽氣旺盛，心智迷惑，不自覺地責備自己與世界不一致。
因此，他借來斧頭打算斷除這個困擾。
佛陀告訴這位比丘：「你為什麼如此愚癡地不理解道理呢？欲求修行者應先斷除愚癡，然後控制心念。
心是善惡的根源，欲斷除根源應先控制心念。
只有心定下來，意識明晰，才能修得道。」
於是佛陀即時說了以下的偈言：
「學習先斷除愚癡，領導君臣二者，
放棄一切追隨，這是上道之人。」
佛陀告訴比丘，十二因緣中的癡是罪惡的根源，智慧是行善的基礎。
在追求修行之前，應先斷除愚癡，然後執著意念才能穩定下來。
佛陀說完後，比丘感到慚愧並自責地說：「我一直以來都被愚癡和困惑所迷惑，久久無法理解古典的教導。
現在佛陀所講述的真理真是妙啊！
我內心思考正確，意識安定，守住心念，壓抑欲望，就能在佛陀的指引下達到真正的修行。」
這位比丘深感佛陀的教導的優越性，他內省自己的錯誤，並意識到修行的關鍵是斷除愚癡、控制心念，這才能實現心境的穩定和達到道的境界。
他在佛陀的面前得到了應有的真理的指引和啟發。
Once upon a time, in the Jeta Grove in the kingdom of Sravasti, the Buddha was preaching to celestial beings and other sentient beings from four different realms.
Among them was a young monk who was stubborn and ignorant.
He lived a solitary life in the wilderness and had not yet grasped the essence of the teachings.
He was plagued by strong sensual desires and his thoughts were consumed by worldly cravings.
His vital energy was rampant, and he couldn't control himself. Consequently, he suffered from the distress of being unable to transcend the world.
Sitting alone, he contemplated and realized that in order to attain purity and progress on the path, he needed to eliminate the root cause.
Thus, he went to a benefactor's home and borrowed an axe. Returning to his room, he closed the door, took off his clothes, and sat on a wooden plank.
He intended to use the axe to sever his sensual desires, believing that these desires caused him great hardships.
Having experienced countless cycles of birth and death, he recognized that all the suffering in the three realms and six states of existence stemmed from attachment to sensual pleasures.
Without eliminating this attachment, he believed that he could not attain enlightenment.
The Buddha, knowing his foolishness and confusion, entered his room and inquired about his intentions.
The young monk put down the axe, dressed himself, and prostrated before the Buddha.
He confessed that he had been practicing for a long time but still did not understand the methods of cultivation.
Whenever he engaged in meditation, his thoughts were obscured by desires, his vital energy surged, and his mind became deluded. Unconsciously, he blamed himself for the inconsistency between his thoughts and the world.
Therefore, he borrowed the axe with the intention to sever this affliction.
The Buddha then advised the monk, questioning why he was foolishly ignorant of the principles.
The Buddha explained that those who seek spiritual cultivation should first eliminate their ignorance before controlling their thoughts.
The mind is the source of good and evil, and to eliminate the root cause, one must first master the mind.
Only when the mind is tranquil and the thoughts are clear can one attain the path to enlightenment.
The Buddha immediately recited the following verse:
"Learn to sever ignorance first,
To lead both ruler and ministers.
Abandon all attachments,
This is the way of the noble."
Upon hearing these teachings, the young monk felt ashamed and reproached himself, acknowledging his ignorance and confusion that had hindered his understanding of the ancient teachings.
He marveled at the profound truth expressed by the Buddha.
With introspection and a resolute mind, he resolved to guard his thoughts, restrain his desires, and attain true realization under the guidance of the Buddha.
This young monk deeply appreciated the superior guidance of the Buddha's teachings.
He reflected on his own mistakes and realized that the key to spiritual cultivation lies in severing ignorance and controlling the mind. Only then can one attain a stable state of mind and reach the realm of enlightenment.
In the presence of the Buddha, he received the appropriate guidance and inspiration to embrace the truth.
