Normally, I just don't have the right mindset to truly enjoy very unstructured sandbox games, but the enormous indie sensation Minecraft (developed by a Swede, no less) is just too ambitious, ingenious and awesome to overlook.

The foundation is simple - explore a procedurally generated world, mine for materials, craft a range of useful items and defeat various monsters - but the actual gameplay experience can become as staggeringly complex as the player wants it to be. YouTube is already overflowing with examples of people creating the most amazing architectural landmarks imaginable (everything from medieval castles to football stadiums to a highly detailed replica of the Empire State Building) using the game's deceptively simple controls, but just exploring one of the vast, randomly generated yet surprisingly atmospheric worlds while looking for precious minerals and avoiding dangerous enemies is fun enough on its own that non-creative people such as myself can have a good time as well.

If you're only going to play one independently produced game this year, make sure it's Minecraft...
