The Witcher (Gameplay #3) Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards
Combat in The Witcher is rather weird, and can most favorably be described as an interesting but ultimately failed experiment. The developers clearly wanted the system to have a very tangible realtime element, which at the same time didn't reward the player for simply spamming the left mouse button. More specifically, the game requires you to time mouse clicks inbetween attack animations so that the individual moves string together into neat little combos.
While this sounds good in theory, in practice it quickly degenerates into a very predictable clicking rhythm which is as repetitive and detached - if not more so - than the simpler Diablo-esque controls found in most conventional PC action RPGs (although the animations themselves are admittedly good enough to give the whole experience a certain visceral feel). The Witcher does include magic and alchemy mechanics as well which help flesh out the system somewhat, but the latter in particular is a bit complicated so I've only just begun to wrap my head around it.
