In my pile of ICs I had a 80287 floating point unit, which I installed into the 286 retro PC. On current machines -- even embedded ones -- an FPU is standard. But back in the 80s and even the early 90s it was a rarely needed and expensive piece of equipment. What kinds of gains can you expect from this piece of hardware?
