do lungs exist in this game's world

REVIEW
___________________________

I'm quite surprised at how much I've committed to this game ever since I downloaded an emulator for mobile games. I've always known of this game but never thought much of it as it pertained to the mobile gamer crowd. But being able to play this on PC, I'm very much glad I gave it a shot.

The bulk of the game is for gameplay and re-playability value but the story definitely tries to keep you entertained. Playing as a father trying to reach his daughter and sister is a simple premise but over time, allows you the opportunity to be immersed in a crumbling world where death and destruction roams free.

Where the voice acting succeeds in presenting distress in depression scenarios, this is also where it falls flat. As I mentioned before, the gameplay takes precedence and the story is no exception. You are only given situations to imagine when it comes to other characters apart from James as you do not interact with anyone else except the radio the entire time. Not to mention, you become the embodiment of "so close, yet so far" as you really never reach your intended target until the very end. You essentially marathon across the whole country destroying 100s of zombies until the climax.

The story certainly feels like a means to an end but if that doesn't bother people playing (let alone care at all for the story), than this is where the gameplay shines. A simple run-and-gun FPS utilizing different weapons and companions, zombie types and environments makes for a cemented and fulfilling experience where you mow down countless undead to your liking. All originally compacted into a small mobile device in a market full of top downs or side scrollers.

Graphics are limited to the base demands of the phone's hardware but even at the lowest quality, care was taken to make sure the visuals for all aspects (zombies, weapons, environments, companions, VFX, etc.) would not be considered subpar.

The addition of many side-stories, different 1/3 day events for weapons and companions and dailies allows for many reasons to come back to the game, whether extra stories built in the ITD universe or simple milestones to reach such as leaderboard spots or levelling up weapons.

With all mobile games though, this game sure likes to remind you of deals and offers encouraging a "pay to win" style design. It being free however (on top of it being single-player) should not deter anyone willing to give the game a try as you can play the game at your own pace. And from what I've seen upon purchase, VIP undoubtedly gives you much bang for your buck, all for a month's worth.

The energy/battery system is a sly way to encourage real money being used and while I do not mind spending money of my own volition to a company that isn't sleazy or has pay to win mechanics in the game, I can understand why people may not like harsh restrictions on a game that's supposed to be free in the first place. Benefits such as VIP improves the experience and quality of life aspects greatly but not having it severely restricts replay value if you're passionate enough to keep playing over a prolonged period of time.

The best place VIP shines is through grinding as it allows for much more ease of access regarding weapon parts for crafting and upgrading weapons (companions as well). For casuals, this will not be too much of a concern but for people really wanting the most out of this game, you are incentivized to get VIP as it will take much longer to collect and improve items. I mentioned early on that the grind in the game can seem tedious at first but playing the re-playable content and hopefully enjoying it in the process, you will get silver, gold and item parts in no time.

All in all, with all the time I've invested in this game, it makes for either 2 things: a fun FPS to mow down zombies at your own leisure enjoying whatever the game offers you for a long time or a simple timewaster. Neither are bad to approach this game with which makes it even better if it covers ground of whatever type of mobile gamer that you are. I wholeheartedly recommend this game for casual or immersed players.
