REVIEW

Atmosphere and a sense of loneliness can be all that's needed when it comes to horror. Cheap jumpscares and lazy writing plagues horror games as a medium. So if one utilizes dread and tension effectively, it can make for a very impactful experience and F2F: Carson House does not disappoint.
A basic plot about housesitting over a weekend doesn't seem innovative but building this as a fundamental to allow for slow burn effects up to the climax is much more rewarding than immediately up in your face horror. Especially when the plot is not obvious either and makes you wonder what is really going on. The game alludes to threats elsewhere and makes you suffer them inadvertently but it becomes obvious near the end that another force is at play. I appreciate this type of writing as it doesn't spoon feed information to players like children and keeps us on our toes with constant twists and turns.
Gameplay is your traditional wandering around and exploring the environments while doing menial tasks but this is intentional as it allows the slow burn horror to catch on over time. Observing your surroundings and experiencing different emotions upon reaction is much more emphasized over run of the mill gameplay mechanics.
It's not often you get games recapping a series of events in a horror setting and allowing creative liberties taken to immerse the player. You play the game as a memory so primarily, everything that happens is matter of fact and should not be done "differently" from the main story. To add on to this, jumpscares are practically filler. You are not supposed to die in these episodes so any potential "threat" is there not as a passive danger but all because the player deviated from the memory. Curiosity often kills the cat in Fears to Fathom.
I do wish the ending wasn't so complicated from what I experienced. I felt trapped in that room so moseying on over to the other room to hide more effectively, especially when Cara was right around the corner seemed a bit off to me. Perhaps the little hiding spot that was the most obvious could've worked had I used stealth past her but we would've been less than a meter apart so it threw me off a bit. Having failed that multiple times and having the checkpoint set me back 3-5 minutes every time took my enjoyment away from me, annoyingly more when that kept happening right before the end of the game. Maybe it isn't as difficult as I made it out to be but I do wish the checkpoint was a little sooner.
The world is a scary place so it's no surprise there's limitless stories to be told in an Indie franchise like Fears to Fathom. Inexpensive, well-made, retro graphics, and constant updates to episodes, what's not to like? Carson House is definitely worth your money.
