The eminent jwz, of XScreenSaver fame (among other things), rightly pointed out that the rendering of the Diatoms screen saver was faulty in the previous video.

Sure enough, the Newport graphics board emulation in MAME wasn't handling per-pixel alpha correctly. After fixing it, it much more closely resembles the XScreenSaver port of Diatoms.
