Is 12GB enough in 2025? The power trap without VRAM
In this video, we debunk the idea that "more GPU power" is always better than "more VRAM." I compare real-world scenarios where a faster 12GB card is limited faster than one with 16GB, not due to a lack of cores or clocks, but due to video memory.
I demonstrate how Windows, the Desktop Window Manager (DWM), OBS, and even opening browser tabs consume VRAM from the same pool used by your game. In the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 recording, closing OBS causes the total GPU memory usage to drop, highlighting this background load. If you start with 12 GB, that overhead reduces the margin for textures, caches, and RT, forcing you to lower quality or disable effects and negating the advantage of the "more powerful" GPU.
