Is A New Mario Game Coming Out?

With all of the recent talk surrounding the Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild sequel delay, it leaves a hug gap for premier  Nintendo titles in the second half of 2022. And it got me thinking about the possibility of a new Super Mario game, which would be amazing and sell more consoles but how realistic is it ?

One of the ways to figure out the likely hood of a new Super Mario title on the Switch is to figure out the average mainline games released per console to see what are the chances of the next game being on the Switch or being released on the next system.

Taking into account only original titles and not ports of collections, the average Mario titles per home console system is 2.1, for handheld is 1.25 and combined is 1.81. Things don’t look bright when you take any of these averages because we have already seen the release of Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Maker 2.  However, if you want to look at the glass half full, then the NES, Wii and Wii U all had three original Mario titles, which means there is still hope for one more original game before the Switch successor.
