I’m gonna give you the TRUTH about clickbait straight from a Youtuber - me! Why do we do it, how we use it for both good AND evil, to make a difference in the world, or waste your time, ahh, After watching this video, you'll have a better understanding of the difference, because people don't talk about this, and because it might not be what you think it really is... so get ready to chill out, talk clickbait.
My names Allstin, let’s dive right in.
Firstly, and a lot of people don’t realize this, clickbait begins at True Neutral, but turns into either Lawful Good, or Chaotic Evil.
True Neutral
What is clickbait?
The word-for-word dictionary definition of clickbait is “content whose main purpose is to attract attention and encourage visitors to click on a link.” Sounds like YouTube, yeah?
Lawful Good
What is “good” clickbait?
Good clickbait is a video title that makes you want to click it - but one whose video content DOES reflect the title.
An example for Among Us would be “The #1 Secret Impostor Strategy I Found”, here’s the catch - PROVIDING THAT you did find it, and show it. Your video HAS to deliver. No exceptions.
For DOOM Eternal, it could be “How I made ultra-nightmare perma-death easy” IF you had tips that legitimately related to the title and helped the viewer.
Here’s an example - this video. Look at the thumbnail. Title. Intro. Did it make you click? Well I mean, it did, because you’re still here too, but I say it’s GOOD clickbait.
Why do some YouTubers not want to use it?
Honestly? I think they think it feels scummy. That they’re manipulating their viewers. Since they have this idea that clickbait is bad.
The true power of clickbait for good
This is good right here, listen to this
The true lawful good power of clickbait is something people miss - yet it’s actually REALLY important.
Let’s dial it down a step to a more everyday situation
What if you do comedy gaming, and there’s a viewer who is having a really bad day? And your video makes it better?
Or if they didn’t click your video at all, because it just didn’t look interesting, and their day continued to suck.
I know this sounds dramatic, but I would be willing to bet money (and the last video I bet on, I WON!) that this could potentially be a real life situation.
Here’s a personal example from me:
I released a video called “Why Elitism Hurts DOOM Eternal”, talking about why we should treat our fellow gamers with respect, regardless if they play on easy or hard mode.
And of course there were hate comments on my Elitism (which I read and reacted to here, it’s super funny), but you’ll have that as a YouTuber.
What is evil clickbait?
Now, onto the heavy topic... of evil clickbait. What is it?
It’s when a title is misleading, deceiving, and wrong... it doesn’t deliver on its promises.
I may step on some toes here, and I’m sorry, but I have to say this, to spread the message, so don’t hate me.
Bot farms have clickbait that doesn’t even show up in the video or thumbnail AT ALL, yet they still get insane views. Ann Reardon made an amazing video on that ,its like 20 min or somethin, its so freakin good.
This is important.
I, as a YouTuber, have to make sure i respect you and your time. If i don’t, you’ll stop watching me.
So... am I perfect in every regard? No. Nobody is, we are only human. Our respect is earned by those watching. After all, arent we all viewers that just wanna watch some awesome videos?
