Grim Dawn is such an amazing game, let me tell you why. I’m Thyworm and here are my first impressions of Grim Dawn in 2019.

I should have been hanged, apparently, but someone saved me. I’m not sure why, but my help is sorely needed, because the undead, demons, cultists and bandits are ruling the lands. In this fantastic action RPG hack n slash, you, are going to change this. By killing them. All of them.
Grim Dawn was recommended by a viewer on Twitch, I already had the game in my library, but never really played it. And I’m glad I did. After the stream, I’ve been playing this slasher basically non-stop, for hours and hours, and recently, I finished my first playthrough on normal.

I chose a soldier. Sword n board are my go-to characters. I love the tankiness, shield charges, shield slams, taunts and of course a heavy set of armour. Grim Dawn didn’t disappoint. The skill tree is extensive, options are vast. You can choose up to two classes for hybrid characters as well, which is great and a feature that was also present in Titan Quest.

I went with some passive skills that enhanced my attacks, I had this screen tearing shield charge, a force wave ability that shattered enemies from a distance and left them bleeding, and finally Cadence, these smoothly animated primary attacks that makes my third attack do massive damage.

Apart from skills in the skill tree, there are constellations that can further enhance your build. Points for these are earned by cleansing shrines, by either offering certain items or clearing the enemies around it.

The skill system is deep, but not overwhelming. I could just use my brain and common sense to come up with what turned out to be a very viable build, without having to rely on build guides. That’s very enjoyable and rewarding, to think up front what you want your character to be like, then slowly build towards that by levelling and collecting gear, and ending up with a build that works. This is something I definitely miss in Path of Exile, which is an amazing game, but much less forgiving and not transparent at all, especially when it comes to different skills. There’s no way to tell which gems you’re going to encounter. In that regard, I really like the system in Grim Dawn, where all skills are visible and the road towards achieving those skills is therefore also clear in advance.

Lore, voice-acting and overall story arcs were decent, as far as I can tell and as far as I read them. I’m much more into the grind than the story, to be honest. Grim Dawn definitely has this Diablo-esque tone to it, however, both in terms of art style and setting. It’s gloomy, dark, there’s rotting corpses everywhere, the whole world is basically a total mess.

The game also succeeds in bringing back another memory from Diablo, which is the intense and addictive gameplay. It’s been a while since I’ve played this kind of hack n slash game, and Grim Dawn is definitely a trip down memory lane, with its combat, cast and deep game mechanics and that loot fever that catches on quickly. I felt like playing Diablo 2 again. Or Titan Quest.
